Twice a month on Tuesday nights chess players congregate in the community room for the library’s Chess Club. Players range in age from 8 to 50, though we would like to extend an invitation to all ages. The Chess Club meets from 5:30 pm - 7 pm. You can come and go as you please. We hope to see you next time the Chess Club meets.

The cold didn’t keep away the people as the community celebrated Thanksgiving with the annual GLO N GO Parade of Lights.  People from all over the area saw 37 parade entries travel down Pine Street & Center Avenue.  The Hospital Auxiliary traveled the route and served 13 gallons of hot chocolate to over 300 people.

Earlier in the evening, the Philip Volunteer Fire Department served over 400 buffalo burgers and 4 huge roasters of buffalo chili.  Free will donations of $3,200 and a matching donation of $2,500 from Modern Woodman’s Insurance will help the PVFD outfit a new fire truck.  The Fire Department appreciates the community’s support.

The Surveys Are In!

Philip LeadershipPLENTYRemember those “FUN” pre and post surveys that the Horizons Staff had you take during Study Circles and LeadershipPLENTY?

Believe it or not - it was for a purpose! Those pre and post surveys help us to understand how much your community learned about poverty and about leadership by your participation in those specified curriculums.

As a result, we have assembled a community profile with the results of the pre and post surveys for both Study Circles and LeadershipPLENTY. Check out your community results by clicking on the links found under “Survey Data” on the right hand side of your community blog.

Glo-N-Go Parade

Monday, November 12th, 2007

Philip’s annual Glo-N-Go Parade of Lights will be held on Saturday, the 24th of November at 6:00pm.  So far there are 31 entries for the parade.  Line up for the parade will be at the American Legion Hall.  If you have questions or would like to have an entry in the parade, contact Roger Williams at 685-3258.

In conjunction with the parade, the Philip Volunteer Fire Department is having a freewill offering buffalo feed.  They will be serving buffalo burgers and buffalo chili at the Fire hall beginning at 4:00pm.  Assisting the PVFD members will be local members of Modern Woodmen of America.  Modern Woodmen will match funds raised to help purchase equipment for a new fire truck.

I apologize to the Hospital Auxiliary.  They will be traveling along the parade route giving out free hot chocolate.  It’s an annual tradition, just like the parade.

Philip Emphasizes its Internet Presence

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Philip, SD launched its redesigned website in June 2007 before the Centennial Celebration. The website is a source of information both for and about the community. Content is contributed and updated by Philip Chamber of Commerce, The City of Philip, Horizons II Steering Committee and many volunteers. While wrapped in a dynamic, new look it forms a site that provides online visitors with dramatic improvements in navigation and accessibility to complementary information on community resources and everyday life in this friendly, peaceful and growing town.

The online visitor has immediate access to the web site’s major topic areas that allow browsing and searching through information about history, attractions, recreation, business community services and resources, statistical data, events calendar, city council minutes, Chamber of Commerce bulletins and meeting notes and everyday life of Philip, SD.

Enhancements to the web site include:

*  Improved Navigation - Web pages work in intuitive and consistent ways, making it easier for visitors to find what they are looking for and know where they are within the web site.

*  Improved Look and Feel - Enhanced graphics and the new page layouts provide visitors with an improved user experience.

*  New Features - New features on the web site include print-friendly versions of the web pages, news and events notices, a drop-down box providing direct access to web pages, a site index, and an FAQ page.

*  Information Sharing – new website offers several RSS feeds for use in news readers and Web logs (blogs). These feeds include headlines, summaries and links back to philipsouthdakota.com website.

By utilizing this popular content syndication technology news from Philip, SD can be easily imported and published by other media or private websites.  While the appearance and high-level organization of the web site are enhanced, the information will constantly be updated by a forming team of editors who will assure that consistency, credibility and currency of the content is maintained at all times.
