This week while preparing for my husband’s 81st birthday we were looking over his Navy scrapbook. It appears that one of your local men, Les Ankrum, served on the same ship as my husband. He was on the USS Salisbury Sound from 1946-1947. We have many pictures of the crew and the places the ship traveled. For some reason Cliff, my husband, has mentioned Les more than the others. My sense is the Les invited Cliff to come to SD and live there with him. Cliff is from Massachusetts and would not take the offer as he wanted to go home. More than once he told me, his wife of 59 years that he wished he had gone, not because he wasn’t happy but for the adventure. If this has any meaning the Les’s family please pass it on to them. I also saw the obituary of Mary, I presume to be Les’s wife.
Your Memorial Day website is very touching. I’ll bet that the people of SD are the friendliest folks in the country.
Our best to you all.
